Many of you have heard me rant on about my misgivings when it comes to Sauvignon Blanc, and may have been at the receiving end of my little schoolmastering bit, in attempt to sway those who regard themselves as Sauvignon Blanc fans believing that all Chardonnays are the same. I may have called you 'shallow' or 'lacking in substance' or the like, but most likely didn't. I would have urged you to experiment a little however, as drinking Sauvignon Blanc conjures up the analogy of living life in the missionary position! Craaiky, there’s got to be more to life, surely?! So this is for you Convent girls out there.
The taste range of Chardonnays is dramatically wider than other white varietals, though cheap Chardonnay is unfortunately a very poor reflection of the quality that one can achieve through great quality fruit and careful, expensive French oak barrel fermentation (without overdoing it). The cost of making a great Chardonnay far exceeds that of a Sauv Blanc, and can therefore not be compared on a price for price basis. Unfortunately however, those buying wine on price alone, will not get to taste a truly great Chardonnay. Not that one has to break the bank to find excellent value either.
I was encouraged however, to read Christian Eedes latest article in Wine Magazine, and Eben Sadie’s echoing my sentiments, though with an interesting angle on “why wine makes you horny”, and really worth a read and a laugh..
